What are the Best universities in UK for graphic design?

I’m in year 11 now, and I’m hoping to go on to do graphic design (or something very similar, like visual communications) at university.

I live in London, but I’m pretty much open to universities anywhere in the UK. From what I’ve read Online, University of the Arts London seems to be one of the best, but I’d like to know what some of the other top ones are for graphic design.

Nottingham tent university is the absolute best for graphic design. it has only recently changed from a polytechnic to a uni which is why it is not high in league tables – academic subjects are not Trent’s strong point but it is a highly re guarded uni for all art subjects, especially well recognised for graphic design, fantastic buildings a facilities ,you should visit on an open day they have them very often, good luck

A Field Guide for Science Writers

A Field Guide for Science Writers

$21.95

This is the official text for the National Association of Science Writers. In the eight years since the publication of the first edition of A Field Guide for Science Writing, much about the world has changed. Some of the leading issues in today’s political marketplace – embryonic stem cell research, global warming, health care reform, space exploration, genetic privacy, germ warfare – are informed by scientific ideas. Never has it been more crucial for the lay public to be scientifically literate. That’s where science writers come in. And that’s why it’s time for an update to the Field Guide, already a staple of science writing graduate programs across the country. The academic community has recently recognized how important it is for writers to become more sophisticated, knowledgeable, and skeptical about what the write. More than 50 institutions now offer training in science writing. In addition mid-career fellowships for science writers are growing, giving journalists the chance to return to major universities for specialized training. We applaud these developments, and hope to be part of them with this new edition of the Field Guide. In A Field Guide for Science Writers, 2nd Edition, the editors have assembled contributions from a collections of experinced journalists who are every bit as stellar as the group that contributed to the first edition. In the end, what we have are essays written by the very best in the science writing profession. These wonderful writers have written not only about style, but about content, too. These leaders in the profession describe how they work their way through the information glut to find the gems worth writing about. We also have chapters thatprovide the tools every good science writer needs: how to use statistics, how to weigh the merits of conflicting studies in scientific literature, how to report about risk. And, untimately, how to write.

A Student's Guide To Religious Studies

A Student’s Guide To Religious Studies

$6.24

The study of religion in American higher education is fraught with difficulties that raise important questions about the nature of faith and the purpose of advanced learning. Although religion has been foundational to some of the United States’ most prestigious universities, religious studies is a relatively recent addition to the liberal arts curriculum. As a result, students often take courses in religion with expectations that exceed what professors can actually deliver. D. G. Hart explores the conundrums of the ambiguous position of religious studies in the academy and offers advice about the best way to approach and benefit from the teaching and study of religion in contexts often hostile to faith.

 Cosmopolitanism And Solidarity

Cosmopolitanism And Solidarity

$24.54

Who are we? is the question at the core of these fascinating essays from one of the nation’s leading intellectual historians. With old identities increasingly destabilized throughout the world–the result of demographic migration, declining empires, and the quickening integration of the global capitalist economy and its attendant communications systems–David A. Hollinger argues that the problem of group solidarity is emerging as one of the central challenges of the twenty-first century. Building on many of the topics in his highly acclaimed earlier work, these essays treat a number of contentious issues, many of them deeply embedded in America’s past and present political polarization. Essays include Amalgamation and Hypodescent, Enough Already: Universities Do Not Need More Christianity, Cultural Relativism, Why Are Jews Preeminent in Science and Scholarship: The Veblen Thesis Reconsidered, and The One Drop Rule and the One Hate Rule. Hollinger is at his best in his judicious approach to America’s controversial history of race, ethnicity, and religion, and he offers his own thoughtful prescriptions as Americans and others throughout the world struggle with the pressing questions of identity and solidarity.

 Faith And Hope In Technology

Faith And Hope In Technology

$14.63

Technology has advanced more in recent decades than in any other era in human history. As Christians, how should we approach science and technology? In Faith and Hope in Technology, Egbert Schuurman offers a responsible and biblical approach to working in the areas science and technology, shedding light on the nature, benefits and problems of Western technology from within his profound commitment to a biblical understanding of human life under God. Dr. Schuurman’s Faith and Hope in Technology . will be of significant help to those Christians who are struggling with issues raised by biotechnology, cybernetics, and the increasing technological character of contemporary life. -Charles C. Adams, Dordt College Schuurman offers a much needed prophetic critique of the autonomous development of modern technology. Carefully documenting the pervasive character of the scientific technical quest for utility and control, he arrives at the inescapable conclusion that modern technology does not deliver the promised freedom of redemption, but instead enslaves us and degrades the society in which we live. Drawing on the best insights of the Reformational tradition, this fine exposition offers a viable alternative. -Hans Boersma, Trinity Western UniversityEGBERT SCHUURMAN is Professor in Reformational Philosophy at the Technological Universities of Delft and Eindhoven and at the Agricultural University of Wageningen, Netherlands. He is also a member of the Senate of the Dutch Parliament. His other books include Technology and the Future: A Philosophical Challenge (1980); Christians in Babel (1987); The Future: Our Choice or Gods Gift? (1990).

Global Intelligence and Human Development: Toward an Ecology of Global Learning

Global Intelligence and Human Development: Toward an Ecology of Global Learning

$12.5

Increasing concerns about the future of humankind that arise from threats of terrorism, nuclear war, and environmental destruction dramatize the fact that we must begin working collectively to change our ways of interacting with one another and with our habitat. In Global Intelligence and Human Development, Mihai Spariosu argues that the best way to bring about this change is through education. We need, he says, to create learning environments that help us to develop a global mindset. Spariosu presents a new conceptual framework for dealing with globalization from an intercultural perspective and outlines an innovative model of learning based on an ethics of global intelligence, which he defines as the ability to understand and work toward what will benefit all life on earth. This kind of understanding, he argues, can emerge only from ongoing intercultural dialogue and cooperation. He identifies the problems that pervade today’s education system and then proposes concrete ways to begin moving toward global intelligence. To overcome the adverse global consequences of prevalent Western scientific practices, Spariosu proposes a nonreductionist ecological model of science that draws on nonlinear concepts from general systems theory. He concludes that there is only one kind of science: human science, which incorporates the physical and the social sciences as well as the humanities and the arts, engaged in continuous dialogue and cooperation. In the final sections of the book he discusses ways in which universities could be reoriented toward promoting the kind of local-global learning environments needed for sustainable human development. Higher Education in a Global Society

Higher Education in a Global Society

$123.43

The problem of the 21st century is rapidly expanding diversity alongside stubbornly persistent status and power inequities by race, ethnicity, gender, class, language, citizenship and region. Extensive technological, economic, political and social changes, along with immigration, combine to produce a global community of great diversity and interpenetration. Unfortunately, this global community continues to be fractured by extreme disparities in wealth and power, divided into haves and have-nots. Universities around the globe can play critical roles in economic development and sociocultural exchange. Where different communities interact, overlap, exchange and compete for scarce resources, complex challenges are presented. Current discourse often views difference and diversity as problems; however, a growing scholarship reframes difference and diversity as potential resources. This volume presents research into the consequences of difference and diversity for higher education. An international group of scholars reflects on the challenges and prospects of diversity, difference and inclusion for universities in their respective societies. Various theoretical and empirical perspectives are used to better understand how diverse populations and expectations intersect to influence higher education and societies globally. Diversity and difference are defined broadly to encompass specific national contexts and their particular emphases on race, ethnicity, gender, culture, language, religion, sexual orientation and/or region. We find that around the world, higher and tertiary institutions confront the diversity imperative with varying approaches, success and best practices. -Identifies challenges and opportunities that diversity poses for higher education- International comparisons of how diversity affects higher education and of the salience and impact of diversity in higher education- Outlines practical, effective strategies for managing diversit

 Killing Time

Killing Time

$15.28

Killing Time is the story of an extraordinary life. Finished only weeks before Paul Feyerabend’s death, it is the self-portrait of one of this century’s most original and influential intellectuals. Trained in physics and astronomy, Feyerabend was best known as a philosopher of science. But he emphatically was not a builder of theories or a writer of rules. Rather, his fame was in powerful, plain-spoken critiques of big science and big philosophy. In landmark essays and books, and in legendary lectures delivered from Berlin to Berkeley, Feyerabend gave voice to a radically democratic epistemological anarchism : he argued forcefully that there is not one way to knowledge but many principled paths; not one truth or one rationality but different, competing pictures of the workings of the world. Anything goes , he said about the ways of science in his most famous book, Against Method. And he meant it. Yet few know much about the private life of this most public of intellectuals. For the first time, Feyerabend traces his trajectory from a lower-middle-class childhood in Vienna to the height of international academic success. He writes compellingly and with extraordinary honesty of living through Nazism and his experience in the German army on the Russian front, where three bullets left him crippled, impotent, and in lifelong pain. He recalls his promising talent as an operatic tenor (an enduring passion), his encounters with everyone from Ludwig Wittgenstein to Bertolt Brecht, innumerable love affairs, four marriages, and a career so rich he once held tenured positions at four universities at the same time. Although not written as an intellectual autobiography, Killing Time chroniclesthe people, ideas, and conflicts of sixty years. Feyerabend writes frankly of complicated relationships with his mentor Karl Popper and his friend and frequent opponent Imre Lakatos, and his reactions to a growing reputation as the worst enemy of science . He is characteristically self

 Marcel Breuer

Marcel Breuer

$3.52

One of the best known and most admired architects during the 1950s and 1960s, Marcel Breuer is today remembered primarily for the singular design of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. In this long overdue appreciation of the premier modernist, Bob Gatje looks back at the 23 years he worked with Breuer to offer a personal account of Breuer’s design methods and practice. The text is complemented by photographs of the buildings, Gatje’s own dramatic drawings of the works, and candid photographs of Breuer and his contemporaries.Born in Hungary, Breuer studied at the Bauhaus in the 1920s, where he became known for taut, avantgarde furniture designs. In the mid-1930s he went to London and was subsequently invited by Walter Gropius to join him on the Harvard faculty. In 1946 Breuer moved to New York. His affinity for natural materials and vernacular architectural expression led him to design spare wood houses that revolutionized modern residential architecture. A series of glass curtain walls was to follow before Breuer made concrete the essential material in his palette.Drawing on his own memories and experience, as well as extensive interviews with other architects, clients, and friends of Breuer, Gatje details the intricate planning and design that went into buildings for New York and Yale Universities; IBM laboratories in La Gaude, France, and Boca Raton, Florida; an entire ski town in the French Alps; and many other projects. From the passage of time, the exchange of ideas, and their mutual respect, Gatje has drawn a vivid and affecting picture of a unique architectural practice, and of one of the great architects of the modern era.

Meeting the Special Needs of Adult Students

Meeting the Special Needs of Adult Students

$29

In this volume, we examine the ways student services professionals in institutions of higher education can best meet the needs of adult learners. Most of the discussion here is situated in four-year colleges and universities, although we recognize that community colleges play a large role in the higher education of adults. However, we made the decision to focus on four-year and post-graduate institutions because we believe that these institutions often are focused on traditional-aged students despite growing adult enrollments, and are most in need of guidance about how to serve this ever-growing population. Students in higher education often are defined as adult learners or non-traditional students if they are 25 twenty-five years of age or older, and, more significantly, if they have taken on what we consider adult roles and responsibilities, such as caring for children and other family members, working full-time, or participating heavily in community activities. Adult students typically are not focused on campus life in the same way that younger, traditional-aged students are. Therefore, our theories of the importance of the campus experience outside the classroom to student development usually do not hold for adults. Yet, adults can and do learn and develop through their engagement in formal higher education. Adults bring experiences and wisdom into the classroom, and receive a learning experience that informs their own professional and personal practices. This is the 102nd issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Student Services.

One Hundred Semesters: My Adventures as Student, Professor, and University President, and What I Learned Along the Way

$26.33

I have read Bill Chace’s book and found it moving and full of what Nietzsche called ‘joyful wisdom.’ He is the Ishmael of American higher education’s great quest for excellence: he has seen it all, its glories and shames, its triumphs and defeats, its ironies, tragedies, and paradoxes–and he has survived to tell us the tale. He is the best commentator on college and university life since Clark Kerr. And he weaves the threads of his own life and his own struggles into the great tapestry of institutions. His story takes us beyond the roles he has played–student, professor, dean, president–into the life he has lived in these institutions. It has been a good life but not an easy one. And out of it he has drawn thoughtful lessons for all of us who care about America’s best colleges and universities. A wise and well-crafted memoir. –Tom Gerety, New York University In his engaging and delightfully honest account of the changes he experienced in American higher education over the last half century, Bill Chace mixes memoir and affectionate criticism as he reflects on his own continuing education in a variety of roles: student, teacher, administrator, on six very different campuses. While deploring the destructive role that intercollegiate athletics has come to play, the competitive commercialization of what was once thought of as the life of the mind, and the cost of attending college today, Chace’s respect for and love of teaching, and all that is best in the academy, shines through the pages of this thoughtful book. Those of us who have spent our lives on a campus will see our own experience mirrored in Chace’s odyssey, and for those who have not, it will be clearer why highereducation in this country is admired around the world. We should all hope that ‘loving critics’ like Chace will continue to answer the calling. –Mary Patterson McPherson, President Emeritus of Bryn Mawr College and Vice President of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Chace’s book is not a sta

The eyes of the world are on the new Pope Benedict XVI as never before and there has been a tremendous demand for fresh insight into the life and career of this powerful man– well known for his hard-line perspective on church law and politics. Michael Collins, who has an intimate knowledge of Vatican affairs and has met Pope Benedict XVI on several occasions, has written a balanced, succinct, and highly-readable biography of the new pope for those who would like to know him better. POPE BENEDICT XVI describes the former Cardinal Ratzinger in both a human and historical context. Starting with the pope’s early years in Bavaria and his youth during the Second World War, he goes to describe his academic career, which included teaching positions at four state universities. During the landmark Second Vatican Council Dr. Ratzinger served chief theological advisor to Cardinal Josef Frings of Cologne and then returned to teaching. He was awarded the chair of dogmatic theology at the University of Tubingen, all appointment for which he was endorsed by prominent liberal theologinn Hans Kung. He was appointed Archbishop of Munich in 1977. Four years later, he was named Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the position he held for twenty-five years and for which he became best-known. After thirty years as a correspondent and editor for Time magazine, Barrett Seaman embarked on an independent two-year investigation to uncover the real story of college life today. He especially wanted to see how and why undergraduate living has changed since he was at college in the tumultuous late 1960s. Seaman was surprised by the realities of student life on today’s campuses and is concerned by the implications they hold for the future. In this major new book, Seaman reveals what every parent, student, and educator needs to know about what really goes on after classes let out in dorm rooms late at night, in fraternity and sorority houses, and outside the quads. Seaman spent time with students in their dorms at twelve highly regarded and diverse colleges and universities across North America Harvard, Dartmouth, Middlebury, Hamilton, the University of Virginia, Duke, Indiana University Bloomington, the University of Wisconsin Madison, the University of California-Berkeley, Stanford, Pomona, and Canada’s McGill University. During his two years of research, he immersed himself in the lives of the students, often living in their dorms, dining with them, speaking with them on their own terms, and listening to them express their thoughts and feelings. Portraying a campus culture in which today’s best and brightest students grapple with far more than academic challenges, Binge conveys the unprecedented stresses on campus today as well as the sense of isolation students feel from the real world and often from each other. The book reveals the complexities of an environment in which romantic relationships and sexual relations are often casualand ambiguous, alcohol and drug use are widespread and dangerously unchecked, anxiety and depression are common, and boundaries along class and racial lines are too often permeated with tension. He exposes the increasing aloofness of professors and the stereotypes that student athletes

Saving Higher Education In The Age Of Money

Saving Higher Education In The Age Of Money

$8.47

Since 1965 an increasing preoccupation with money has resulted in the inversion of its role in higher education, from a practical means to an end that crowds out all others. No longer do students and parents choose the best education that money can buy. Instead, they are faced with choosing which college or university will buy them more money. This comes as no real surprise, as the cost of attending a four-year college has doubled since 1985. Yet the question persists: at what real cost are we sending our students to college? Renowned educator James Engell and coauthor Authony Dangerfield explore the answer to this question in Saving Higher Education in the Age of Money. They argue that the counterbalancing attitudes that used to temper a focus on money with other equally legitimate and more fundamental goals have steadily weakened, resulting in a new consensus that elevates money and the marketing of oneself and one’s institution to the foremost ambitions of the intellectual world. This new minimization of higher education to the category of an investment to be repaid has damaged all disciplines not directly associated with money, particularly the humanities. Students often now are told they face a choice: between the practical sciences, business, and economic success, or the traditional liberal arts and sciences and expected poverty. In their comprehensive analysis of admission practices, institutional rankings, salaries, hiring practices, scholarships, student attitudes, tuition costs, research programs, library budgets, and class barriers, Engell and Dangerfield expose the major changes that the Age of Money has wrought in higher education while also offering a practical methodof understanding and prioritizing the various elements involved in choosing the right school. Focusing on liberal arts and sciences colleges, private research universities, and flagship public institutions, the authors provide an explicit and coherent model of what an academic institut

Teacher Education in America: Reform Agendas for the Twenty-First Century

Teacher Education in America: Reform Agendas for the Twenty-First Century

$55.28

Teacher preparation has always furnished a target for lively criticism. From the days of the first teachers’ normal schools in the late 1830s to the elaborate preparatory programs offered in contemporary schools and universities, the question of how best to train classroom teachers for the nation’s schools has been a topic of continuing controversy. In Teacher Education in America, Christopher Lucas offers valuable insights into this ongoing debate. Including an illuminating account of the history of teacher education in the United States, Teacher Education in America is a thought-provoking analysis of the major issues and problems surrounding teacher preparation. Lucas reveals the traditional four-year undergraduate programs — as well as the short-term alternative teacher certification routes — to be largely insufficient to the needs of the nation’s schools. In addition, he studies and critiques the so-called field-based models which have been touted as the wave of the future.

 The Age of Obama

The Age of Obama

$74.95

Drawing on collaborative research from a distinguished team at Harvard and Manchester universities, The Age of Obama asks how two very different societies are responding to the tide of diversity that is being felt around the rich world. Guardian journalist Tom Clark, Robert D. Putnam — best-selling author of Bowling Alone — and Manchester”s Edward Fieldhouse offer a wonderfully readable account. Like Bowling Alone, The Age of Obama mixes social scientific rigor with accessible charts and lively arguments. It will be enjoyed by politics, sociology and geography students, as well as by anyone else with an interest in ethnic relations. Injustice, it turns out, still blight lives of many UK and US minorities — particularly African Americans. And there are signs the new diversity strains community life. Yet in both countries, public opinion is running irreversibly in favour of tolerance. That bodes well for the future — and suggests a British Obama cannot be ruled out.
